Shipping Firearms Accessories

P15242323As we’ve discussed in previous postings about firearms, there are numerous restrictions when it comes to shipping antique or collectable firearms in addition to shipping ammunition. But there are a number of accessories and equipment used for various firearms activities and hunting that can be shipped with little to no restriction.

Accessories and Gun Parts
There are a few components in rifles and pistols that are considered ‘firearms’ in the eyes of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Those pieces not considered firearms by the ATF are not held to the same restrictions as the entire firearm itself. Examples of items that may not be restricted include rifle stocks or pistol grips, hunting scopes, carrying straps, holsters and/or laser sights. Again, as restrictions change with relative frequency, if you’re unsure as to whether or not a component qualifies as a ‘firearm’ according to the ATF check with your local FFL.

Airguns and Airsoft Guns
Neither airguns nor airsoft guns are held to the same restrictions as modern or antique firearms. While both items are still capable of causing bodily harm, the only restrictions placed on these types of items is that airsoft guns must have at least a 1/4-inch blaze orange muzzle or an orange flash hider. United States federal law requires that all airsoft guns are sold with this marking to avoid being mistaken for firearms. Airguns – which shoot steel or copper BBs as opposed to pellets – do not have this same restriction regarding the different colored muzzle or flash hider.

Ultimately, the responsibility to know the various laws of your state or country falls to you yourself. If you’re unsure as to whether or not a firearms accessory or part qualifies as a firearm check with your local FFL. Failure to do so can result in stiff penalties for even unintentional violation of state or federal laws.
